End Of Watch: May 17, 1975

On Saturday, May 17th, 1975, at approximately 5:45 pm, Manchester Township Patrolman Robert T. Tobias was struck and killed while standing at the driver side door of a vehicle he had stopped on the west bound shoulder of State Highway 70 at mile marker 35.8 here in Manchester Township.

Officer Tobias was the first local police officer killed here in the line of duty.

Officer Tobias was hired by the Manchester Township Police in March of 1974 and had been with the Department for just over one year when he was killed. He was only 23.

The operator of the vehicle which killed Officer Tobias was subsequently arrested and charged with death by auto, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and operating an unsafe vehicle.

Officer Tobias was laid to rest on May 21st, 1975, leaving behind his Father John, Mother Eleanor, Brother John, and Sisters Donna and Denise.
